NCEP/NCAR Global Reanalysis Products, 6-hrly, monthly

This data set contains products from the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis Project. The resolution of the Reanalysis Model is T62 (209 km) with 28 vertical sigma levels. Most output fields are saved 4 times a day. The plan is to reanalyze the data for a 40-year period, between 1957-1996 and to continuously update the analyses to keep them current. Plans also call for rerunning the the entire period every few years. The output products include over 80 different variables and several different coordinate systems. The coordinate systems are a pressure level stack (17 levels) on a 2.5x2.5 degree lat-lon grid, a sigma level stack (28 levels) on Gaussian 192x94 grid, and a theta surface stack (11 levels) on a 2.5x2.5 degree lat-lon grid. This archive includes analyses and first guess fields.

The observations used as input to the analysis are also part of this archive. Forecast fields are available in ds090.1. Most of the analysis, first guess and forecast fields are archived in WMO GRIB format. Observations are archived in WMO BUFR format. The collection is organized in subsets where subsets are defined by groups of variables/levels on the same coordinate are stored. Some special periods will be analyzed more than once to provide data for special research studies. For example, a special NOSAT run of 1979 was made excluding most satellite inputs. This run could be used for evaluating the impact of satellite data on the analysis. During TOGA-COARE experiment period, special runs of reanalysis model without (NOEXP) experimental data are archived under TOGA-COARE directory. Extensive documentation on the content, access, status and known problem areas of the Reanalysis archive is available from the DSS ftp/web site.
